Hi friends! I’ve missed you! I still don’t have my Grand Canyon post ready, but I do have a fun little giveaway to start this week off right!
About a month ago, I was contacted by the nice folks at DEI Worldwide about Safeway’s new Simple Nutrition program. It’s pretty simple: Developed by registered dietitians and food labeling experts based on the latest published health agency guidelines, Simple Nutrition makes it easier to make healthy choices while you are grocery shopping.
Throughout participating stores, you’ll find tags on certain products highlighting up to two key nutrient and ingredient benefits. Nutrition benefit tags include Made with Whole Grains, Sodium Smart, Good Source of Fiber, Low in Fat, Good Source of Calcium and many more. You’ll also find products tagged with benefits such as Gluten Free and Organic.
I think I am a little more informed than the average grocery shopper, so I don’t know how helpful they would be for me (I’ve already done my research and know what I want/don’t want in my grocery items), but I can see these being really helpful to someone trying to make healthy choices for themselves and their family and not really knowing where to start. For example, if you’re in the cereal aisle and see a cereal with a Simple Nutrition label, maybe you’ll be more inclined to pick that cereal up and try it. I know a lot of people find reading nutritional labels daunting, so this might be a step in the right direction in getting them to pick healthier items.
Of course, you can’t rely on the grocery store or the manufacturer to spell out the full nutritional story behind any product. Be an informed consumer and read the nutrition label and the ingredient list!
